Where are you from? Cumming, Georgia

How long have you lived in Athens? I lived here between 2003-2010 to finish my undergraduate and masters degree, but then I moved to Charlotte for several years. I moved back to Athens in 2015.

What’s your passion? I love my yoga practice and sharing it with others, so the path of yoga (beyond just the asana practice) is certainly a passion of mine. My other passions include spending time with my son, reading fiction and non-fiction related to social justice and cultural issues, using and educating others about the benefits of essential oils, and my work in promoting equity in education.

Favorite book? The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone

Favorite movie? The Lion King

Favorite restaurant? The National

When did you start practicing yoga and why?
I started practicing in 2007, when I was senior in college. I had developed a disordered body image that ultimately resulted in an eating disorder. I eventually started seeing a therapist, and as part of my work with her, I joined a meditation group with other girls my age who were facing similar challenges. I noticed one evening that the meditation she read to us came from a yoga resource, and I got curious. I had been a three/four-sport athlete my whole life, and so yoga was a different way of moving and engaging with my body. Through my budding yoga practice, I began to appreciate and befriend my body in new ways. Yoga was therefore one of the primary tools that helped guide me out of a dark time in my life, and I am ever so grateful I was introduced to yoga when I was.

What’s your favorite yoga style?
I like to practice and teach flows that are traditionally slower and ones that focus on holding postures and connecting with breath. I practice and teach Pranakriya yoga, a style of Tantric Hatha Yoga from the tradition of Swami Kripalu.

How long have you taught yoga? What inspired you to teach?
I completed my 200 hour training in 2012 and have been teaching ever since. I was inspired to teach in order to share the healing and therapeutic aspects of the practice with others.

What’s your advice to someone who is new to yoga?
Be patient with the practice. At first, your mind is really loud with trying to keep up, worrying about whether or not you’re doing the shape correctly, and on top of that, trying to be mindful of and control your breath. Eventually, your body will get used to the movements and postures and your mind will quiet down. The layers of the breath will come with practice.

What is your favorite pose?
It changes often, but I always find that my favorite postures are the really simple ones. Right now, my favorite pose includes variations of anjaneyasana, a knee down lunge, that includes stretches of my chest and shoulders..  

What’s your favorite class to teach at M3? Favorite to take?
I love to teach flow classes that are really “centering” and “meditative.” I enjoy teaching M360 and Pranayama & Meditation. My favorite class to take is Nick’s Super Stretch.

What do you enjoy most about M3?
I enjoy that we all work hard to create an inclusive environment. I really do believe that yoga is for every body, but finding spaces that are inclusive to different body types, different ages, etc. is sometimes hard to come by. I enjoy the different styles of yoga offered at M3, and I love that the teachers and interns are warm and friendly and care about the space.
